When I was younger I never thought eyebrows would be so important. Had I known, I wouldn’t have let the 1990’s posses my body and make me pluck my brows to the point of almost being nonexistent. Unfortunately because of the aftermath I’ve spent countless hours, just ask my husband, filling in my brows. I’ve tried every brow product known to man and never feel truly comfortable without my brows being filled in. Then I heard of microblading, and I had to find out more.
It doesn’t matter if you like them arched and feathered or straight and bold, eyebrows are arguably the most important facial feature. If you’re not satisfied with the ones you have, there are so many ways to update them, including brow gel, pencils, and even tattooing. But now there’s a very natural option that delivers semi-permanent results. Moms, I’d like to introduce you to microblading. Unlike the sometimes Sharpie-esque effects of permanent makeup, microblading is more of an embroidery of trompe l’œil strokes that look just like real hairs.
I decided to do my research and found Fara Julian (farajulian.com) at the Revive Hair and Skin Restoration Spa (revivehairandskinrestoration.com) in Clinton Twp., MI. This spa is actually an hour from my home however, after seeing some botched microblading mishaps, I knew it was worth the drive to go to the best. The results of microblading are unbelievable! Imagine your eyebrows looking perfect and staying that way for what could last for 18 months! This technique is done by using a very fine blade to deposit pigments into the epidermis. The strokes appear very fine and crisp because microblading effects color closer to the surface of the skin.
My before picture. Dear sweet baby Jesus if I ever come back in another life I PROMISE I will NEVER pluck my eyebrows. Ok maybe a little, just to give them a cute arch lol.
How it works: The required pigment is deposited into the superficial dermis of the skin with the disposable microblade which allows the technician to create bespoke, crisp hair strokes which look like natural eyebrow hair.
Making sure I get just the right color match while the topical anesthetic works its magic:)
All I can say is I must love my readers because these are some hideous pictures of me!!!!
Measuring to create the perfect set of brows:)
Microblading differs from conventional semi-permanent tattooing by the very fact that it is a manual procedure. When using a hand held micro blade, the color is deposited closer to the surface than when a machine is used leaving very fine and crisp hair strokes with no spilling under the skin. Mom’s I can tell you that this DID NOT HURT!!! I was honestly pleasantly surprised because I was fully prepared for no pain no gain however, that wasn’t the case. All I felt were little scratch like sensations, and I didn’t require any extra numbing cream for discomfort.
The picture above (scary I know) was my last placement of pigment before she wiped it away to revel my new AMAZING brows!
The above two pictures were taken in my car out side the Revive Hair and Skin Restoration Spa (revivehairandskinrestoration.com) immediately after having the microblading procdure done. I kept looking at myself in the rear view mirror in disbelief as to how natural my brows looked.
How long it lasts: Microblading tends to last between 18-36 months and after this period of time may need a color boost or refresh. There is a recommend perfecting session 6 weeks after the first application. I’ll post pictures and give more updates and final thoughts after I have this completed. After the 6 week session, the brows heal darker and look more defined. The perfecting session is basically the cherry on top and I’m really looking forward to the final results.
Know that your eyebrows will go through several phases during the healing cycle.
Above is typically what you can expect during the 1st 30 days after microblading. I can say that these pictures are pretty accurate to what I’ve experienced thus far.
The pigment will appear very sharp and dark immediately after the procedure. This is because the pigment is still sitting on top of your skin, and has not yet settled in completely. The color of the pigment will soften gradually. I was told not to be alarmed if I saw some pigment on the cotton swab, as this is excess pigment and/or body fluid that is naturally exiting your skin.
This is me the day after microblading. I was a little concerned with how dark they initially were, but they softened up after about a week. The best part about the technique is that there is no down time. Your new set of brows will be ready for the drive-thru pick up line at school immediately after the process.
Once the healing of the skin starts taking place, it will look like dandruff flakes or dry skin. This might give you the impression thast the color pigment is fading too quickly, however, this is just superficial color and dry skin being naturally removed from your eyebrows.
The picture above is me day 9 after microblading. The color has lightened and for the most part, all of the scabbing is gone. I was really lucky in that department and only had really one day of scabbing that shed where my brows didn’t look so hot. After my 6 week perfecting session, my brows will be darker and completely filled in. Again, this is a two step process and I’ll post an update and my final thoughts on this process then.
Moms, if you’re looking to enhance or reshape the look of your eyebrows, this method is ideal for you. Regardless of the amount of hair present on the eyebrow, the results are natural looking, hair-like strokes. Microblading is for anyone suffering from alopecia or anything that causes hair loss, as well as people who merely want fuller gorgeously shaped eyebrows. So far I give microblading by Fara a BIG thumbs up, and would recommend it to any of my friends and family.
